Here are the four best charts to use in slide presentations when storytelling with data.
Let’s use each of these charts to present the story of how Amazon has quietly built a global ad-tech giant.
1. Horizontal bar
Bar charts are easy for eyes to read and compare category sizes. Use shading to draw attention to the category you are discussing. Avoid displaying more than 10 categories.
2. Line
Line charts are great for showing trends over time. Use markers to annotate and explain key moments. Avoid overuse of color when comparing segments. Use shading and bolder lines to draw attention to your primary segment.
The chart above may surprise you. How does Amazon make so much more ad revenue than YouTube? From selling sponsored ad listings when customers search for products. Also, unlike YouTube, Amazon doesn't have to share 55% of its ad revenue with creators.
3. Simple text
A single metric is often the best way to make a message stick. Use language to draw comparisons to previous data points. Bold text to draw attention to the primary message.
4. Waterfall
Waterfall charts are best for showing complex stock and flow changes over time. They are a great alternative to complex financial tables which can be left in an Appendix. Group flow categories together and avoid displaying too many segments.
